Both the horse and donkey get this so I trim the hair flush with the edge of the ears so there is less for it to hang on to. They all love having the insides of their ears scratched and although you get dirty fingers it does remove a lot of the wax. Put a baby wipe onto your finger to clean more off.
This is sooo bizarre... yesterday i rang the vet as i have finally managed to have a really good look inside nectors ears and working my way in to my horror, put in my thumb and pulled out a plumb!!!! Actually i just say that cos it rhythmes LOL.... it was disgusting tho... one ear was crusty grime ? mites.. or normal.. the other a black slimey goo like treacle... I did trim some of the hair at the bottom of her ears..
The Vet said that i could wash/wipe a little with salt dissolved in warm water which is what i have tried to do until he comes to have a proper look when she is more amenable to vet handling...... u can imagine it is a long and time consuming process... involving advance retreat and good timing.... However we are perservering all be it that passersby are recieving the odd hit with a yucky bit of ear gunge covered cotton wool as she wrenches her head away in an avoidence ear flicking shake of her head...
Oh yes, ear de-waxing is a bonding thing. I comb it out, any that doesn't come out on my knuckle! Charcoal also loves having her ears scratched.
NB watch out in March for ear blood sucking flies!! Used to coat her ears in Battle cream - now summer fly cream (EU friendly version) I don't worry now as she has the Boett hood on from Feb. Still that doesn't help much with the ear wax situation!!
