Hi,
I'm new and would love a mule that I could ride.
I have 2 x 16h mares TBx and am thinking of breeding a mule from one of them.
Does anyone know where I could get donkey semen in the UK?
If I do use a normal sized UK donkey, ie 11to 12h crossed with my girls what sort of size would I get?

I think Susannah Powell had the last of the seen Roy Harris had from his big Catalan Stallion.I don't know whether she has any left but you could try asking Helen Brodie who bought a Hanoverian cross shire Mule foal off her last year so is in touch with her helenbrodie2@aol.com

There's deffinately a working male in the North Midlands area ask

The guys in the Midlands were recommended to me and I got as far as buying my potential mule momma at the start of the season - I thought I'd give her a week to settle in before I rang them to see if they would take her to their donkey and by the end of the week I decided she'd be better sold on ..... So I've never spoken to them!!

Other than that I did a fair bit of googling "Donkey Semen" and thought about importing some from the states but my mule breeding enterprise is currently on hold due to lack of funds!

That's quite encouraging if it's the mare's height that counts, but a 16.1h mule?? I'm an auld wifie I'll never get on!!

I'm working on OH at mo. There are donkeys in this area so I may be able to gat a service naturally but I thought if donkey didn't fancy mare or mare donkey AI might be the way to go.

US just seemed to have miniture donkey semen, but if size of Jack doesn't matter so much that may be OK.

Now any suggestions as to how to get OH to agree to another equine?
Mind you I sometimes think what the heck get animals and shake rid of OH LOL

Don't you dare!!!!! Its LOVELY and hot here, the flies are manic but at least my foals are not drowned rats this year. We are the opposite end from you, down near Gretna.

I think if you crossed your mares onto a standard donkey you would probably only end up with a 14hh to be honest and obviously the problem there is *ahem* logistics, for natural covering!! If you used a mini donk I think the result would be truly horrible! Though I have seen some mini ponies crossed onto arabs that weren't too freaky.

I did find a site that did mammoth donkey jack swimmers... let me go hunt!

I have found that the best way to introduce another equine to OH is to just do it. The mare I bought as a yearling and I had owned her for three months before he found out she was mine. Then I put her in foal without telling him........... I have just done that again Oops. As long as essentials like the electric bills are paid and there is something for him to eat in the house he gets by.
I have put the mare back to a horse stallion as AI costs are just too high for me to afford.

Errrr and 'cos that first foal is CRACKING!!!!

Couple of leads for you.

Firstly, Pacific International in USA have some mammoth jacks with export-approved semen if you wanted to go down that route:

Secondly, with 16.1hh mare mum, I would have thought a 13hh standard donkey would likely get you a nice 15-15.2hh riding mule, but if you want to guarantee larger size you'll have to go for mammoth.

I did stumble across a chap in Witney two weeks ago (took Moon to a Kelly Marks course, held a place near Witney, and one of their neighbours has a huge number of horses and has "been trying to breed a good mule for 20 years..."....) and once I dragged his eyes away from Moon, to whom he took a fancy, he was telling me about his 2 year old Poitou colt. Which he has, alas, been running with donkeys, not mares, so it may be too late to get it into horse-fancying-mode and ultimately have it serve mares naturally but I could track the guy down for you if you like....

I kept hearing for years about a man in Witney who had a big Jack and bred Mules,I gave up in the end and decided it was a gypsy tale because I never heard of any....why do these people keep themselves hidden.?

Sorry I have not been back for a while, been really hectic I have reared nearly 40 calves, bottle fed since i spoke to you all last, i just seem to have been making up bottles 7days /week for ages!! Oh and working 3d/week for the past month. This up at 5:30 feeding before work__ I really am toooo old for this. Just as well I'm going to miss Camerons up to 66for OAP!!!
Haven't ridden for ages either. But I'm still hoping to persuade OH about my mule!! I'll do some more research with these sites and perhaps get going next year.
There is a 11h gelding for sale up here 2yo. Saw it in our local ScotAds.
