I am planning on taking Nectorbee... to a show and entering her into the youngstock showing class... in july I have asked the person running the show and she said that would be fine...

Is there any showing mule criteria i should know about... for example.. to plait or not, hog or not... trim or not.. etc... what should she wear etc... she has plumped up a bit and muscled with the hill work and is shiny and gorgeous although is acting like a killer attack monster when it comes to dogs (we are working on this..... )

A lot of people roach (Yank term for hog )their mules to show them and if done correctly can improve their neck outline.
You could always e-mail Albie,bet he knows how its done as a lot of Spanish mules are done for Parades

Have spent 22 months growing out Moon's mane and am wavering...... it lies down in winter under neck rugs but pops up again in summer, and her forelock still looks like a bog brush. But I'm going to try and get her into the Foreign breeds class class at Anglesey Show (it's open to "pure bred foreign breeds" - well she is a pure North american Saddle Mule, with NASMA papers to prove it, you can't cross breed mules... reckon I'll get away with it?) and she'll be plaited with English in-hand bridle, partly because I'll have my western show halter on Jack on the same class (QH)

Plaiting sounds like a good option.... just because i am not sure that i can bare to clip/hog nectorbee at the mo.. but will have a think, her neck is so skinny and ewe looking am not sure hogging will look good where as if i plait maybe i can disguise a bit...

I thought the hogging line was often used to hide a ewe neck?

Bens mum was a Welsh pony named Royal Champagne.
Could I put him in part bred Welsh or would I be laughed out the ring?

Nope! I did ask the breed society once and they said it would be o.k. but double check.

Good news or bad news????


Well the good news is Nector went to her first show today to be entered into best youngstock in hand showing....

Bad news... i was asked that if she scared too many horses to take her away...

Good news the judge liked her and said if she was judging mules she would come first! (however admitted she did not know how to judge mules and noo was the only mule in the show lol)

Bad news.... she came last?

Good news.. last was 5th place so she was still a winner... ya hoo......

I have video of my fiesty little gleeming beasty... but not sure how to get it uploaded.. try and get husband to do it at some point!

I find there is more of a problem with Mules attracting horses than scaring them....its the horse owners that are the problem!

Agree with Jenny, the only time a horse has even noticed Treacle it has fallen in love with her!

Hmmm the judge wasn't very brave! I would have judged based on turnout, manners and straightness of movement, length of ears doesn't make any difference!

Well, luckily I'm friendly with the lady who always wins the foreign breeds classes round here (she has a magnificent Morgan stallion, immaculately presented) but he is obsessed with Moon. So we're going to try taking Moon over to where he lives, to see if he can get bored with the sight of her, and I'm going to pick Sara's brains on show presentation cos she's just ace at it! Our big day in 12 days time.

Mrs Moon had her wolf teeth out yesterday, and whilst we had her sedated we got x-rays of her tibia where the funny bone marrow lesion was last year. It's changed, although not 100% normal in the middle of the medullary cavity (not that it matters because she is sound and the bony cortex where strength comes from *is* normal) - I need to find out the the x-rays of dogs with panosteitis ever go back to fully normal....
