Post subject: Moody Milli Mules hormone dilemma...

Hello again. This is a question for all those experts in female mule hormone levels. I've only every had geldings (horses) before, and as I've said before Milli (8year old mule) can be a bit tricky to say the least at times. Then at others she is graciousness herself and kind and a pleasure to ride. Anyway, I just thought this was a mule trait and just deal with her mood swings day by day. She does not show any signs of going into oestrus at all (I've been told by more experienced friends), but the other day I took her to a friends field (twas one of her frisky days) and my friends gelding became very amourous indeed. So this made me wonder...maybe her mood swings are due to un-balanced hormones? I've been recommended to buy one of those moody-mare balancers. What do you think? Are they any good for mules? Any knowledgable answers are greatly appreciated...Natalie www.lanceandhames.co.uk Sadly we won't be making it to the mule weekend
I used hormonize (chaste berry liquid) with Charcoal to keep her on an even keel when I was first driving. and when going to events. it did seem to help.
I also had a chat to Twink Allen who had palpated a number of Argentinian mule mares. From memory I think he said a proportion of mule females would only have primitive (non functional) small ovaries but a percentage would have normal reproductive systems and hence display the cycling behavior. In fact mule mares can be really overly amorous and like jennies will mount other animals and stand to be covered by a stallion, or even mule gelding!!

quick reply! Yes Milli has been known to mount other mares?? And also become very friendly with other horses. I've not seen her mounted by anything herself though I will have a look for that hormone balancer and try it on her. She is a really sweet little girl and she is (finally) happy to be ridden out on a hack (still a bit frantic in the school). However it looks like she'll have a bit a of a rest now, as I've just found out that I'm pregnant and I'm, so far, the only one brave enough to ride her (I'm trying to persuade my husband to give her a go... he is currently still resisting, but I'm working on it!) If there is anyone kind and very experienced, who would like to ride Milli for the next 6 months, just get in touch with me: 07958576534. My postcode is: NG229PB. Otherwise, I'll just start again in April 2009... That seems an awful long time not to ride
Yes, congratulations and good luck. Charcoal came back from her loan home when A-man was two. He was sitting on by three, but only made passenger status and not pilot.

I'm already looking for a donkey so we can all go out together, as both I and my husband ride. Or maybe a mini mule? Poor baby, not even born yet and I've already mapped out it's riding career for the next few years, including Hickstead events etc (no not really, I'm a natural horsemanship girl)
