For some time now we have been trying to get 2 Zebra and have been actively researching the possibilities of breeding with them. As you probably know there are several different types of Zebra, some of which are endangered.
The concept of an american quarter horse is interesting but my research would tend to prefer a large donkey cross.
Several of the zoos and wildlife parks have promised me male zebra but so far they have been like hens teeth.
There have been several very good examples born in this country, mostly by accident! The colouring and confirmation have been excellent.
Watch this space, we are awaiting this years matings with interest.
However please don't all write to the zoos asking for zebra as the allocation of young is very strictly controlled and only recognised collections are considered.

Angie Alison (Looking Glass Stud) used to have two Zeedonks when she was in Hereford but although they'd done parades and Bishop Mule days in the USA she did not do anything with them. She advertised them for sale and there were rumours that the original owner bought them back.
This is a photo I took of one

I know somewhere you can buy zebras in england but i cant remember where it is but they started at £2500 for colts and £3500 for fillys they also had a breeding stallion for sale for £7000
are they a lot of zorses in the uk does any body have any pics
jinglejoys what were the zeedonks like to handle??
Too be fair I don't know for sure just remember seeing pictures of them in The Brayer (The American one)before they came over here. They were doing parades and Bishop Mule Days.
I don't think Angie did anything with them for the two years she had them although she said she was going to ride them but I only saw them in their stalls
There are a few zeedonks in this country mostly accidents with shetland ponies in zoo's so not much use to anyone. There were two bought over from the States with an import of Mini donks about ten years ago. They were 4mnths old and bottle reared! I think they were bought by a zoo or farm park in Norfolk...wonder if they had any training once the novelty had gone!

I was interested in trying to get a Zorse about ten years ago and what seriously worried me was the number of big ranches in the states that had zebra/zorse's etc, showed, raised and trained them and woah - suddenly stopped breeding.

I am still looking. A dealer offered to get me some from Africa, but the cost was ridiculous, and you don't know what you are getting.
UK bred is what I am looking for and preferrably with some good history.
This is a relatively long term project and I do not want to get it wrong. I would be prepared to keep a Zebra stallion at stud for others to use and in that way results could come quicker.
I heard of a very suitable stallion in Scotland, but it has been gelded as I was told that the park was in trouble and they felt that it would be easier to rehome gelded!
If anyone hears of Zebra surplus stock let us know. We are not looking to make a profit from the exercise.

I was talking to a young lad a couple of weeks ago in Scotland - he said his friend had just aquired a zebra stallion and they were running it out with a donkey jenny. I think he said it was a 2yo? (don't zebra's take longer to become sexually mature?) He was a nice lad, very friendly but I'm not sure I was totally convinced I was getting the "true" story!!
Would definately be interested in using your stallion when you get one. (even if it was just the once!!)
